Description

It is important at the beginning to get the terminology right. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a histological diagnosis and not a collection of symptoms. Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) offers a more useful definition than the old ‘prostatism’. The term symptomatic or clinical BPH appears to be popular in Europe, but still ignores the lack of a histological diagnosis in the majority of patients treated by watchful waiting, medical therapy or some surgical procedures.
