Description
Urinary incontinence is a common symptom in older women. It can often be helped using medical treatment particularly in those patients with transient causes and with detrusor overactivity. Genuine stress incontinence, the second commonest cause in older women however, has a limited number of medical treatment options and it is in this condition where surgery may have a useful role. In this article we explore the evidence for the benefits and the problems of surgery in the common types of urinary incontinence in older women: detrusor overactivity, genuine stress incontinence and voiding difficulties.
