Description

Abstract With improved methods of investigation, the specific problems related to the physiology and pathology of the oesophagus in the elderly patient are becoming better understood. Modern manometric, radiological, and endoscopic as well as pH metric techniques have augmented
improved treatment strategies in the elderly patient. Although studies confined to the elderly population are still few this article will give an overview of what is understood of the physiological changes with age and the specific pathologies that are inherent in our ageing population. The article will concentrate on the main age related pathologies of: motility disorders, gasro-oesophageal reflux disease, oesophageal cancer as well as oesophageal manifestations of neuromuscular and neurological disease.
