Description
A general overview is given of the control of defaecation, the maintenance of faecal continence and the effects of ageing. The main causes of faecal incontinence are identified as being due to colonic and anorectal disease, neurological disorders, constipation and faecal impaction, and confusion and impairment of cerebral cortical inhibition. A logical approach to the investigation of faecal incontinence is described, followed by a review of treatment and management options.
