Description
The relationship between glycated haemoglobin concentration, diabetes and subsequent mortality in men has been investigated in 4662 men aged 45 – 79 years, part of the Norfolk cohort of 25 623 men and women who are a subset of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition. All men participating in this study completed a detailed baseline health and lifestyle questionnaire between 1993 and 1997 and attended a health examination. From 1995 blood samples were taken for measurement of glycated haemoglobin in addition to cholesterol. Data for body mass index, blood pressure, smoking habit were available and events of heart attack or stroke were registered. All participants were flagged for death certification at the Office of National Statistics. The statistical analysis included all information up to December 1999.
