Description

The aim of this study was to investigate patterns of referral to a consultant in restorative dentistry in a Dental Hospital and School and to provide information which may be used for comparison in other studies. The total number of patients included in the study was 263, of which 161 were females and 102 were males. The main source of referral was from the general dental practitioner (250, 95%). Principal reasons for referral were problems associated with toothwear, appearance, tooth re placement and endodontics. The results of this study are in agreement with previous studies and indicate that there is a high level of demand for consultant advice and treatment for a number of common restorative problems. It is hoped that this survey will add to the knowledge of referral patterns as currently exist and as high street specialists develop, allow future comparisons to see if the patterns of referral change.
