Description
Acetazolamide is one of the most commonly used systemic medications in the ophthalmic clinic. Mild hyponatraemia has been reported following the use of acetazolamide, but clinically significant reduction in serum sodium with normal serum potassium in a healthy patient is unheard of. This report is on a case of profound hyponatraemia in a healthy patient, which developed with a single injection of the drug intravenously. This case underlines the need for monitoring the serum electrolytes even
in healthy individuals when on treatment with acetazolamide and it may be advisable to do baseline serum electrolytes in elderly patients and in patients with renal impairment before starting the treatment.
