Description
Outcome from critical illness requiring Intensive Care in the elderly, and particularly in the very elderly, is poor. Reasons for this are multifactorial, including co-morbidities and poor nutritional status, however sarcopenia in the elderly remains an important and underrecognised cause of poor outcome. This article reviews outcome of the elderly patient from critical illness and summarises the prevalence, aetiology and treatment of sarcopenia in the elderly.
