The use of ultrasound for central neuraxial blockade has been recently recommended as a useful tool to aid the correct identification and catheterisation of the epidural space. This article reviews the literature and current practice and covers the physics of ultrasound, practical applications, preprocedure imaging, real-time imaging, and the advantages and limitations of using the ultrasound.
