The recognition that hospital acquired infection is a hazard that needs to be managed by effective risk assessment and risk management systems is now key to Clinical Governance. Hazard analysis critical control points (HACCP) is an approach that enables a logical, step-by-step analysis of procedures and process, enabling the identification of hazards, and the determination of critical control points for the control of those hazards. This review assesses the application of HACCP to the control of healthcare associated infections, with practical examples of its application.
