Description
Individuals with intellectual disability have a higher frequency of behavioural problems compared with those of normal intelligence. The incidence of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is significantly higher in individuals with intellectual disability (ID). About 75% of those with autism have an IQ of less than 70. This has resulted in significant overlap of comorbidity of ASD and ID in the relevant available literature. The literature on challenging behaviour (CB) usually does not differentiate the specific role played by the symptoms of ASD (as opposed to the general impact of the ID itself). This review attempts to separate out these effects wherever possible. It also provides strategies for the management of the problematic behaviours found in this population.
