External and internal marks or injuries can be considered to be ante-mortem, agonal or post-mortem in origin. Ante-mortem marks may occur due to natural disease, marks resulting from therapeutic procedures or as a result of injuries, be they self-inflicted, due to the interaction between the body and its environment or caused by the action of one or more other parties.
