Description
Sterile persistent (non-healing) epithelial defects (PED) of the cornea result when its epithelium fails to re-grow over a defect within the expected time course. PEDs, regardless of the cause, may progress through the anterior stroma and result in subsequent stromal ulceration, scarring and vascularisation. PEDs constitute a major challenge in their management. This article discusses the aetiology and management of these lesions.
