Description

Non-surgical root canal re-treatment has become an increasingly common challenge facing General Dental Practitioners and Specialists alike. In most cases failure results from persistence of microbial infection, rather than as the result of a procedural problem with the root canal therapy. A range of additional challenges however face the operator in root canal re-treatment, which need to be overcome in order to control the microbial infection. Such problems include previously unidentified root canal anatomy, existing filling materials and iatrogenic changes to the root canal anatomy. This article aims to present an overview of non-surgical root canal treatment and suggests techniques that may be used to overcome some of the challenges.
