Description
Nocturia, thought by many people to be a consequence of normal ageing is often cited as one of the most troublesome of the lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) by patients and one of the most difficult to treat by clinicians. After the age of 70 years, up to seventy percent of men and women rise at least once per night to pass urine. The amount of bother, sleep and social disruption attributable to the condition increases in association with the number of voids. Nocturia is perhaps the most medical of LUTS and requires careful thought in ascribing an underlying cause. This article discusses the epidemiology, pathophysiology, impact, assessment and management of the symptom and its consequences.
