Description

Localization of parathyroid adenoma

Two recent studies examine the role of
localization procedures for parathyroid
adenoma. The first paper examines the
usefulness of technetium TC99m sestamibi
scanning and ultrasound in preoperative
localization. In this paper Purecell et al
(Parathyroid localization with high-resolution
ultrasound and technetium Tc 99m Sestamibi Arch
Surg 1999;134:824-830) test if high-resolution
ultrasound and technetium Tc 99m sestamibi
scanning can be used for preoperative
localization of abnormal parathyroid glands in 61
patients with hyperparathyroidism undergoing
neck exploration for hyperparathyroidism. High
resolution ultrasound was performed in 59
patients and sestamibi scanning in 58 patients; all
patients underwent neck exploration by a single
surgeon.
