The review provides overviews on Quality Assurance, External Quality Assessment (EQA) and UK NEQAS for Microbiology, with respect to the running of the clinical microbiology laboratory. The principles, impact and limitations of EQA as a tool for improvement of the laboratory quality system are addressed. The role of UK NEQAS for Microbiology is
briefly explored, providing information on the range, size and complexity of EQA schemes and type of analysis performed. Participants most common errors are identified, and recommendations are made on how to make the best use of EQA.
