Endometriosis is a condition more frequently presenting to the gynaecologist. Despite this increasing prevalence, awareness of the disease amongst clinicians and patients alike is still relatively sub-optimal and it is often under-diagnosed due to its multifaceted nature. Management is ameliorative rather than curative largely due to its poorly understood pathogenesis.
This article reviews the background and current thinking regarding possible aetiological factors and pathogenesis of the condition, and highlights current trends in the processes of diagnosis and management of this perplexing condition.
