Current approaches to genetic testing in DNA diagnostic laboratories

Author(s): D Ellis

Description

Following the publication in 2003 of the Government White Paper Our Inheritance, Our Future. Realising the potential of genetics in the NHS, DNA diagnostic laboratories are required to meet specific reporting times for different types of clinical referral. In order to achieve these reporting times, new approaches to patient sampling have been employed including the rationalisation of specific gene testing between laboratories and implementation of semi-automated systems to increase sample throughput. The types of patient referral and the current methods of testing are reviewed.
