Anaesthesia in glaucoma surgery – recent trends

Author(s): F Sii, P Shah & K L Kong

Description

Glaucoma surgery aims to prevent permanent blindness by reducing the intraocular pressure, which is one of the major risk factors for glaucoma when medical therapy and laser surgery have failed. Trabeculectomy is the gold standard for surgical reduction of intraocular pressure. It continues to evolve with increasing technical complexity with the use of anti-fibrotic agents to modulate the healing response. Anaesthesia in glaucoma filtration surgery contributes directly to the success of surgery. The choice of anaesthetic approach depends on several factors and close cooperation and communication between the surgeon and the anaesthetist is therefore essential. The different anaesthetic approaches are discussed in reference to the surgical requirements of trabeculectomy and adjuvant anti-fibrotic agents.
