Description
Since the Report of the National Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Death in 1989 there has been increasing centralisation of childrens services.
However, many children still present for surgery outside childrens hospitals and it is essential that consultants keep up to date with the management of children. For trainees this forms an important part of the examination for FRCA.
Although most children are healthy, some may have coexisting medical illness.
This article summarises the management of these common conditions and their implications for anaesthesia and gives suggestions for management.
