Leukaemia is frequently diagnosed in older age. With a progressively aging population and prolonged survival with the disease, its prevalence is increasing. Geriatricians will often manage patients who list leukaemia among their comorbidities; therefore an understanding of principles of diagnosis and management will undoubtedly be useful in their clinical practice. This review offers an overview on the presenting features, diagnosis and management of the most common types of leukaemia, focusing in particular on the therapeutic challenge presented by acute leukaemia in older patients.
