Description
The 1999 UK Directory of Pain Management Programmes lists ninety-six programmes across the country, and their numbers continue to grow. Pain Management is an established and expanding field, bringing together anaesthetists, physiotherapists, clinical psychologists, occupational therapists and nurses in an interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of chronic pain. Cooperation with, and respect for, other disciplines is facilitated by the recognition that all aspects of the chronic pain experience must be addressed for optimal outcome. This article summarises the structure of pain management programmes and their role in treating chronic pain.
