Description
Selective decontamination of the digestive tract (SDD) is a process whereby antibiotic therapy is administered to patients who are at risk of infection and multiple organ dysfunction. SDD is hypothesised to eliminate harmful aerobic pathogens while sparing endogenous anaerobic organisms. The endogenous f lora prevents intestinal overgrowth of pathogenic organisms, with a resultant decrease in bacterial translocation, sepsis and organ dysfunction and failure.
