Description

In this issue of the journal we have two articles and two interesting cases in
addition to other regular features.

Hypertension is a very common clinical problem affecting 10-15% of the
population. Clinical biochemistry laboratory investigations are required in all
these patients to identify other risk factors as well as to detect the effect of
hypertension on organs such as the kidneys. In addition, in a small group,
(approximately 15% of all hypertensives) further investigations are required to
identify a secondary cause of hypertension. Until recently secondary causes of
hypertension were thought to be from only a small group of patients. However,
recent studies suggest that prevalence of secondary hypertension, especially
renovascular and primary hyperaldosteronism maybe a lot higher than
previously suspected. In this issue Dr Avenell and Dr Panarelli give an account
of the investigation of patients with hypertension and discuss the rationale for
the common tests, as well as tests, which are only done if a secondary cause is
suspected.

Metabolic acidosis caused by poisoning is not an uncommon finding in
hospital practice. Clinical Biochemist laboratories play an important part in the
diagnosis and monitoring of such patients. In the second article in this issue Dr
Bosomworth gives an account of the important cause of metabolic acidosis and
the investigations necessary in such cases.

Finally, we would like to invite readers to submit interesting case reports that
have a particular educational message. The Bulletin will become more lively
and interesting with more contribution from readers.
