Description
Sub-Tenons anaesthesia has been proven to be an extremely effective regional anaesthetic for cataract surgery. It involves the transconjunctival injection of anaesthetic solution into the potential sub-Tenon space producing a good level of analgesia and ocular akinesis. It is a no needle technique thus avoiding potential complications of globe perforation, retrobulbar haemorrhage, optic nerve damage, and inadvertent injection into the subarachnoid space associated with peribulbar or retrobulbar regional anaesthesia. The technique is illustrated and potential problems highlighted.
