Patients with Sjögren’s syndrome often present to the ophthalmologist with dry eyes (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). However, it is important to remember the multiple other manifestations of Sjögren’s syndrome. One particular problem is the young female patient of childbearing potential. Early obstetric input is advised, because there is an increased risk of fetal loss and congenital heart block (Neonatal Lupus Syndrome).
New medications, both systemic and topical, have recently become available. This case report reviews current management options with particular reference to the management of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in primary Sjögren’s syndrome during pregnancy.
