Description
Root canal preparation is about managing microbial infection. Canal preparation is critical to that, removing microorganisms and substrate from major canals, and allowing access for volume exchange of active irrigants. The chief problem is that its difficult with traditional instruments, and many cases fail because initial entry and infection control was inadequate.
Nickel Titanium represents a major breakthrough in endodontic practice, heralding radical new instrument designs, and allowing rapid rotary preparation. The rewards are well documented, but practitioners should be familiar with NiTi, properly trained and cautious. A variety of tapered and taperless file systems are described with brief descriptions of their use.
NiTi systems have proved themselves for rapid and predictable canal enlargement, but the synergistic role of bleach and calcium hydroxide in managing infection and securing periapical healing should not be diminished.
