Peptic ulcer disease in older people: Epidemiology, Helicobacter pylori, drugs and haemorrhagic complications

Author(s): T Ghosh, OJ Corrado & SM Everett

Description

Peptic ulcer disease continues to be an important health problem in the older population with a rising incidence of hospitalisation for bleeding ulcers. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and drugs (aspirin and non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in particular) are the most common causes. Effective methods for diagnosis and treatment of peptic ulcer disease exist. The complications of peptic ulcer disease carry a high mortality in older people due to co-existing co-morbidities. Endoscopic therapy is a safe and effective treatment of bleeding ulcers in the older population.
