Modern Imaging of the Airways

Description

Until the 1980s radiological investigation of the airways was hampered by the paucity of abnormalities detectable on conventional chest radiographs. Direct opacification of the bronchi using contrast media (bronchography) was required to demonstrate structural abnormalities such as bronchiectasis. Computed tomography (CT) has revolutionised imaging of the airways, providing a non-invasive technique which is complementary to direct inspection by bronchoscopy and is also an important adjunct to lung function studies.
