Description
Analysis of induced sputum is a useful method for assessing airway inflammation in chronic respiratory diseases. Differences in cell counts, particularly an increase in eosinophil and neutrophil counts, may be useful in supporting a diagnosis of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Levels of eosinophil or neutrophil products may also be helpful. Response to treatment, particularly corticosteroids, can be assessed. The value of induced sputum in clinical practice needs evaluation.
