Description
This brief review will focus on the treatment of severe Staphylococcus aureus infection with intravenous antimicrobials. In the first section, the rational dosing of β lactam antibiotics for the treatment of methicillinsusceptible will be discussed. S. aureus (MSSA), glycopeptides for therapy of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and the pharmacodynamics of dalfopristin/quinupristin (Synercid). Clinical data related to the use of combinations of antistaphylococcal agents will be reviewed and evidence related to the optimal duration of therapy for S. aureus bacteraemia discussed. Finally the present situation and therapeutic implications of vancomycin resistance in S. aureus. will be examined.
