The principal focus of the continuing medical education (CME) Journal in Cardiology will be to provide the clinician with a practical tool to help translate the evidence base in cardiovascular medicine into daily clinical practice. Three strategies will be used to achieve this objective.

The first will be to keep the focus on disease conditions encountered by a physician in daily clinical practice.

The second will be for each issue to be styled as a monograph, allowing the disease condition to be covered in sufficient breadth and depth, thus reducing the need for other references.

The third will be to present the evidence base of cardiovascular medicine in an order a physician is likely to consider when reflecting on the available options: for instance, when considering therapeutic interventions, why should treatment be administered; in whom and when; which agent and what dose.

Three issues are planned over the next year. The current issue is on acute coronary syndromes and the next two will be on heart failure and arrhythmias respectively. It is expected that major areas in cardiology will be covered in three years, and the cycle continued thereafter.

CME for consultants and other career grade physicians is now formalised though the Royal Colleges. It is intention of this publication to provide editorial content that supports clinicians in the requirements for CME and revalidation.

I look forward to the coming years and hope that the format of the new journal will keep the interest in the Journal high and that the Journal will continue to serve the cardiology community.
