Description

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a disorder of coagulation associated with a variety of disease processes. It is a disorder characterized by activation of both coagulation and fibrinolysis. This causes microvascular thrombi, resulting in end organ failure, and a consumptive coagulopathy leading to haemorrhage. The syndrome is heterogeneous and varies between low grade activation of coagulation, that is detectable only with sensitive blood tests, to an acute medical emergency associated with a high mortality.
