Abstract
Anaesthetists and surgeons give the majority of blood transfused in UK hospitals. This practice is not without risk. Furthermore homologous blood is a scarce and expensive resource. This article looks at current methods of blood conservation and briefly examines future developments in the field of transfusion medicine.
