Description
A 31 year old lady gave birth to a healthy baby girl by
caesarian section. Two hours after the operation she
suffered a significant postpartum haemorrhage
(PPH), the haemoglobin falling to 45g/L (115-165).
She was transfused and taken back to theatre for
laparotomy and resuture repair for atonic uterus and
intra-abdominal bleeding. Following a one day stay
in ITU she returned to the obstetric ward where she
made an uneventful recovery. Five days later the
serum sodium level was noted as 130mmol/L
(135-145) which had fallen from a baseline of
135mmol/L. However, this was not considered
significant and she was discharged home.
