Description

Human brucellosis is a rare condition in the UK and, although it is frequently suspected in the work-up of febrile patients who lack an immediately-obvious cause, it was not diagnosed in several long-term retrospective analyses of admissions to Infectious Disease Units.1,2 The bacteria that cause brucellosis are capable of causing infection in laboratory workers. This case report and review highlights the clinical features and methods of diagnosis for this rare but serious infection, and outline the current recommendations for safe handling of specimens and isolates in the clinical microbiology laboratory.
