Description

Blood coagulation (haemostasis) is a host defence mechanism that protects the integrity of the vascular system after tissue injury. The system is normally quiescent but becomes active within seconds after tissue injury. Co-ordinated haemostasis involves coagulation proteins, platelets, vascular endothelium and leucocytes, ultimately producing a platelet plug, fibrin based clot, deposition of white cells at the point of injury and activation inflammatory and repair processes. The coagulation cascade is a fundamental component of this defence system.
