Description
This article covers the screening, assessment and monitoring of periodontal diseases. Periodontal diseases are defined and the epidemiology of these diseases is considered. The Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN) for screening, and the methods used for detailed periodontal assessment are described. The indices that may be used to monitor periodontal disease progression are discussed and risk factors for severe periodontitis are identified.
