Tattooing, and more invasive procedures, with distortion or mutilation of body parts has been commonplace in some cultures for centuries. Body art is the term usually applied to tattooing and the wearing of jewellery in unconventional sites.
In the developed world, body art has become popular, especially in adolescence as one means of self expression. Oral or facial piercings are now commonplace and therefore, dentists should be in a position to advise patients.
