Description
Thyroid disease is common in the childbearing population. Pregnancy has significant effects on
thyroid metabolism, leading to alterations in test reference ranges. Symptoms of thyroid disease also
overlap those of normal pregnancy, leading to diagnostic difficulties. Well controlled hypo or hyperthyroidism does not affect pregnancy outcome but poorly controlled disease may have deleterious effects on mother and baby. This review article covers the clinical diagnosis and management of the common disorders of the thyroid gland that may be encountered in pregnancy.
