Description
Myxoedema coma is a rare medical emergency, usually the result of a precipitating event in a patient with longstanding hypothyroidism. Defective thermogenesis due to lack of thyroid hormones is the basis of widespread organ dysfunction. In addition to thyroid hormone replacement management involves attention to body temperature, cardiorespiratory function, sodium and water balance and glycaemic control.
