Description
There is currently a steadily increasing need for interhospital transport of critically ill children. This is a consequence of increasing centralisation of paediatric tertiary care facilities and the demonstration of improved outcomes for critically ill children when cared for in specialist paediatric intensive care units as opposed to general intensive care units. This is a potentially high-risk activity and the current recommendations are that it should be performed whenever possible by dedicated paediatric transport teams with appropriate training, experience and equipment. The aim is to transport the child without deterioration and avoidable critical incidents en route. This review addresses the conceptual, organisational, medical and practical issues involved.
