Revalidation, the latest in a series of professionally-led developments, will assure the public that doctors are up to date and fit to practice medicine.
Revalidation is a continuous process, helped by annual appraisal systems, with external assessment every five years by a group of three trained assessors. One will be nonmedical.
Doctors must provide evidence covering, where relevant to their practice, clinical care, keeping up to date, teaching and training, working with colleagues and relationships with patients. They must also provide assurances about their health and probity. Those failing to satisfy the revalidation groups will be referred to the General Medical Council for further investigation.
Only revalidated doctors will be issued with a license to practise medicine in the United Kingdom.
