Campylobacter fetus endocarditis on a bioprosthetic valve – successful treatment without cardiac surgery

Campylobacter fetus is a rare cause of endocarditis. The organism gains access via the gastrointestinal tract from where bacteraemia and seeding to other organs can occur, especially in those with underlying pathology or immuno-suppressive illness. Only three previous cases of C. fetus endocarditis on a bioprosthetic valve have been described and this is the first recorded patient to fully recover without the need for further cardiac surgery. Antimicrobial therapy should be guided by the organism’s individual sensitivity pattern together with the patient’s overall condition.
